In the early 1850’s Beaford Smith built a sawmill on Silver Creek, near where city hall is today. Next to this new mill was the Donation Land Claim of Polly Crandell Coon, widow of Thomas L. Coon. As Silverton’s Founding Mother, she hired a surveyor, created and registered the first town plat for Silverton, Oregon, with the Marion County surveyor’s office in 1854. She started selling lots, and the rest is history.
